There are more and more cancers occurring in people under 55, including prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. But a serious new disease is taking its toll on younger and younger patients, British scientists have discovered. This cardiovascular disease is a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). While the average age for a stroke is 74, health officials have found that the number of strokes in people aged 50 has increased by 55% over the past twenty years. This far exceeds the 25% increase in cases among 70-79 year olds.
Obesity, poor diet and sedentary lifestyle
Why such an explosion in strokes among those under 55? Professor Stephen Powis, national medical director of the British NHS, said there are likely a range of causes behind this alarming increase. “But we know that lifestyle, and in particular obesity, poor diet and lack of exercise, are among the common factors that can increase the risk of stroke and have a significant impact on health cardiovascular health of people of working age in their fifties and sixties” he emphasizes.
