This Tuesday, November 19, 2024 marks the 1000th day of the war between Russia and Ukraine. On this occasion, Russian President Vladimir Putin has just signed a decree expanding the possibilities of using nuclear weapons in the event of a “massive launch” of air attacks against Russia. The election of Donald Trump, who promised to “resolve the war in 24 hours”, also risks weakening Ukraine. kyiv will undoubtedly have to learn to cope without the help of its biggest financial and military support.
Japan and Canada more generous than France
Since the start of the Russian invasion in Ukraine on February 24, 2022 to August 31, the UNITED STATES have granted 84.7 billion euros in aid, mainly military according to calculations by the Kiel Institute, reports Statista. A colossal sum far greater than the aid allocated by the institutions of the European Union to which France contributes due to its participation in the EU budget. Military, financial and humanitarian support reached 43.8 million euros. Germany is one of the countries that have helped Ukraine the most over the past two and a half years. Berlin, third donor behind the United States and the EU, paid 15.1 billion to the country led by Volodymyr Zelensky. THE United Kingdom is not far behind with 13.7 billion granted to Ukraine.

More surprisingly, the Japanwhich has prohibited itself since the Second World War from delivering lethal weapons abroad and even more so to countries at war, was an exception to its pacifism and ranked fifth. Tokyo supported Ukraine to the tune of 9 billion euros. On for its substantial financial and humanitarian assistance, including a new aid program for our energy sector.”
France only 10th
Then follow the Canada (7.8 billion euros), the Denmark (6.9 billion), The Netherlands (6.4 billion), the Suede (4.9 billion). There France brings up the rear of this top 10 with 4.6 billion allocated between February 24, 2022 and August 31, 2024. Note however that the amounts indicated for the countries of the European Union are underestimated since it is also necessary to add the contribution of the EU institutions to which the 27 Member States contribute.
All these amounts must also be put into perspective with the gross domestic product (GDP) of each nation. And in this little game, Denmark is the most generous with a contribution equivalent to 1.8% of its GDP. Faced with the Russian threat, Estonia and Lithuania are on the podium with respectively 1.7% and 1.4% of their GDP devoted to Ukrainian aid.
