Stellantis in difficulty in the face of Trump's election, Carlos Tavares takes a stand

Because the American automotive landscape could change in the future. With the election of Donald Trump, the future of the electric car is no longer as assured as under Biden and a Democratic nomination. The newly elected American president could notably reconsider purchasing aid or strengthen import taxes on these vehicles. Even though he recently called this technology “scam”.

Good or bad change, this does not worry Stellantis in any case. The firm will adapt to the decisions made by the Republican and its teams. This was announced by Carlos Tavares, general director of the automobile group, on the sidelines of a visit to (Ille-et-Vilaine), during a press point:

“We will respectfully wait for Mr. Trump to make the decisions he deems good for his country, then we will adapt to this context.” “Our mission is simple: to offer clean, safe and affordable mobility. And we will do it with a dosage that corresponds to the expectations of the communities and countries in which we operate.”

The key to flexibility

Donald Trump's decisions could therefore favor existing electric specialists, such as Tesla. A firm to which the Republican is close, because he is a great friend of Elon Musk, one of his new ministers. However, this would penalize other large groups, such as Stellantis.

The fact remains that Carlos Tavares wishes to qualify the action of the American president. This by balancing States, their powers and their sensitivities regarding the environment. “There are very different sensitivities in the United States, even if only geographically, in the different states on the issue of the environment.”

The key to getting through this would therefore be flexibility, according to the boss of Stellantis. This is thanks to platforms that can serve as the basis for thermal, hybrid or electric engines, such as the STLA Frame used for pick-ups, very popular in the USA.
