KB5046617: A Windows 11 24H2 update that does more harm than good?

Cumulative update KB5046617 for Windows 11 24H2, released during Patch Tuesday November 2024, appears to be causing difficulties for many users. Although it is supposed to improve the system, there are various reports of installation errors and malfunctions. Here is an overview of the situation.

One of the most common failures concerns installation problems. There are reports of crashes accompanied by error codes 0x800f0991 or 0x800f0922. Sometimes the installation process hangs at 35%, 37%, or 40% before failing. Even after troubleshooting attempts (stopping services, resetting update folders, automated diagnostics), updating remains problematic.

In other cases the update installs, but Windows Update settings incorrectly indicate that this is not the case.

Windows 11 and KB5046617bugs after installation

There are also problems after installation. For example, the “Alt-Tab” function which is supposed to be corrected still encounters black or empty screens when switching between applications or games. HDR mode in games is problematic with sometimes bright colors or a reddish tint. Crashes (BSOD) and performance issues are also listed, as well as the stopping of certain devices connected via hubs.

Users who have installed KB5046617 also report failures with the taskbar and File Explorer such as the disappearance of icons after waking up or restarting and graphical bugs in File Explorer (menus that open in unexpected directions). Finally, icon problems are also advanced with poor resizing on the desktop and in Explorer.

Microsoft remains discreet about all this for the moment.
