As the full-scale Russian invasion reaches its 1,000th day on Tuesday, Brussels has begun a commemoration in support of Ukraine.
Large Ukrainian flags were displayed around European institutions on the night of Monday to Tuesday, as the thousandth day of the deadliest conflict in Europe since the Second World War approached.
Last August, nearly 12,000 civilians were killed in Ukraine, according to UN figures. UNICEF says at least 2,406 of them were children.
In Kyiv, a sea of blue and yellow flags are flown in honor of fallen soldiers in the capital’s Independence Square.
According to estimates, approximately 80,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in combat since February 2022.
Many of them were volunteers who gave up their civilian lives to answer the call to defend their country.
On Friday, the European Commission announced a second regular payment of almost €4.1 billion under the EU Facility for Ukraine.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the payment “further proof of Europe’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine and the country’s impressive progress in carrying out important reforms to move forward on the EU path while combating a terrible war“.
