During the night of Saturday November 16 to Sunday November 17, a very intense fire broke out in the cellars of a four-story building, located rue Ambroise-Thomas, in the heart of Metz. Firefighters are still on site this Monday. The fire spread to the roof of the building early Sunday afternoon.
Lieutenant-Colonel Zimmer, responsible for operations for the Moselle Departmental Fire and Rescue Service, explains to us: “This Monday morning, we still have residual fires in the roof and cellar. They were processed overnight, and we will continue to process them during the day. Due to the stability of the building, it is imperative to secure access before being able to employ personnel, particularly in the cellar.
The actions carried out during the night consisted of surveillance and treatment of the outbreaks. We also support residents who wish to recover personal effects, after their evacuation yesterday.“
Currently, 40 firefighters and 10 emergency vehicles remain mobilized on site. The lieutenant colonel clarified: “This is a delicate intervention due to the stability of the building. The floors are a problem. We cannot hire staff without first securing the premises. These are old houses with wooden floors, which complicates progression, especially in the cellar..”
The bookstore as well as the music store, right next to it, were protected from the fire. The firefighters carried out a covering operation. They also implemented drying of the premises using vacuum cleaners. Both businesses remain closed and will not be accessible while operations are in progress.
Firefighters hope to bring the fire under control later today. ” The situation is no longer comparable to that of yesterday. Only residual homes remain. We are no longer facing a major disaster.“
The firefighters are calling on the curious not to go there so as not to hinder the work of the fire fighters.
The city of Metz invites users and residents to respect the markings and the work of the emergency forces. Closed streets will be opened to traffic depending on the situation.
