Death of employee in Walmart oven not considered suspicious

Halifax Regional Police say the death of a Walmart store employee on Mumford Road is neither suspicious nor criminal.

Gursimran Kaur, 19, was found dead in a large bakery oven at her workplace on October 19, 2024.

A member of the Sikh community, the young woman immigrated to the country with her mother two years ago. She was described as a beautiful young girl who came to Canada with big dreams by the Maritime Sikh Society.

The Maritime Sikh Society says Gursimran Kaur’s body was found in the oven by her mother, who also works at the Walmart.

In its short press release published Monday morning, the police did not specify how the employee died.

In the afternoon, police provided some additional details in a video on their social media. Constable Martin Cromwell says police conducted interviews and reviewed video footage to determine whether foul play had taken place.

We do not believe anyone else was involved in the circumstances surrounding the woman’s deathhe said, adding that he does not expect the police force to release any further information in this matter.

Reopening of trade

The business reopened its doors to the public on Monday, after being closed due to the events.

A work stoppage was declared last month by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, which also ordered the removal of the device.

The province then lifted the ban on October 28, after authorities determined the store had met safety standards.

A spokesperson for Walmart had then declared that the store on the road Mumford would remain closed until further notice.

At the same time, Walmart said last week that the oven would no longer be used and would be removed from the store.
