It is an understatement to say that this reopening was expected. The shopping mall has been closed since October 17, the day of the violent bad weather which hit the Rhône and more particularly the Gier valley and Givors, causing record flooding.

Devastated, the Carrefour hypermarket remained closed for almost a month. Time to evacuate the stock affected by water and mud and clean everything. A delicate operation which had worried the staff representatives.

“There is an unbearable smell in the store”

“What worries us are the products that spilled into the water. There is an unbearable smell in the store, with foam forming above the water,” said a CGT representative two days after the floods. “What worries us are the products that spilled into the water. There is an unbearable smell in the store, with foam forming above the water,” said a CGT representative two days after the floods. Management then decided to call on a specialized company to remove the waste.

On the eve of the reopening, the Carrefour social and economic committee wants to be reassuring: “The store is ready for customers, at the usual hours. There is no apprehension, but rather a big disappointment,” confides a Carrefour Givors staff representative. A disappointment linked to a decision that goes badly: the three days of absence which followed the floods will not be paid and will have to be recovered. “The employees are completely disappointed. And yet, they all contributed to working despite the closure,” she emphasizes.
Since the disaster, the teams have mobilized daily to clean and restore the premises, recourse to technical unemployment having not been considered. But the CSE insists “There was a surge of solidarity among employees. The Monday following the floods, everyone was there to help, hence our disappointment today. »

No reopening for the shopping mall

In the “Givors Deux Vallées” shopping mall, only the Krys store was able to reopen on Saturday, November 2 by allowing its customers to enter through an exterior door. Castorama had also reopened after 15 days of cleaning. But for the moment, no reopening date is planned for the other brands. “The businesses are doing everything they can to be ready as soon as possible, and their gradual opening will be communicated soon,” announces the Klépierre company, manager of the Givors les deux Vallées shopping center.
