Two people were killed and 13 injured Sunday evening in an Israeli strike in the center of Beirut, the Lebanese health ministry said on X.
The bombing took place on the Mar Elias shopping district. The attack hit an electronics store and a car, a security source speaking on condition of anonymity told Agence France-Presse (AFP). Firefighters used their water cannons to extinguish the flames of the fire which ravaged two floors of the store, according to AFP correspondents.
Many people who fled the bombings of Israel, at war against the Lebanese Islamist movement, in the south of the country had found refuge in recent weeks in this district.
An MP from the Jamaa Islamiya group, Imad Hout, denied that one of the centers of the allied group of Hezbollah and Hamas was hit or was the target of the Israeli strike. “No centers or institutions affiliated with the group are in the area targeted by the strike and no member of the group was the target”declared Mr. Hout to AFP, denying information from the Lebanese National Information Agency (NNA).
This is the second strike targeting the heart of Beirut on Sunday, after a first in the morning which killed the media head of Hezbollah, a pro-Iranian Islamist movement, Mohammad Afif.
