She thought her little daughter had died in a fire while she was held captive not far from her home

The facts date back to December 1996 when Luz Cuevas and Pedro Vera were victims of a terrible fire in their Philadelphia home. It particularly spread to the second floor, where the ten-year-old girl was sleeping. Once authorities arrived on scene, they concluded that Delimar had died as a result of the fire. However, Luz Cuevas, for her part, was convinced that her daughter was still alive. As indicated People this Monday, November 18, she made a strange discovery six years later. While attending a birthday party, she saw a little girl named Aaliyah.

Luz Cuevas was convinced: her daughter was still alive and she could be this Aaliyah. In an interview given to This Morningit was Delimar who returned to the facts. “I have dimples like all my brothers and sisters”, she began before continuing:
“This is what made my mother think that this Aaliyah was actually me, her daughter. She told me that she felt that I was her child”. But why was Delimar at this home, in the company of other relatives?

Luz Cuevas: the DNA test that changed everything

Luz Cuevas was convinced that this Aaliyah was her granddaughter, missing since the fire that ravaged her house. She then decided to trust herself and, to do so, she managed to remove a lock of the little girl’s hair.. She took her directly to the authorities so that a DNA test could be carried out. If this was positive, Luz Cuevas had finally obtained answers to her many questions. Shortly before the test was performed, Delimar said he remembered his mother, Carolyn Correa, “injecting a substance into his mouth.” She then clarified that it was saliva.

Was Carolyn Correa aware that the DNA test would reveal the truth? Did she want to try to cover her tracks by injecting her saliva into Delimar’s mouth? The results came quickly and confirmed the identity of Aaliyah, who was in fact the little girl missing following the fire. For six years, Luz Cuevas did not know where Delimar was even though it was actually not far from home. But why would Carolyn Correa have kidnapped the young girl at the time of the events?

Kidnapping of Delimar: a mother sentenced

The DNA test made it possible to provide concrete answers to Delimar’s relatives. Carolyn Correa was arrested for kidnapping and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Regarding her kidnapping, Delimar says he has no idea why Carolyn Correa would have wanted to take her.
“I don’t think I need to sit down and have a conversation with her because I understand the way her brain works,” Delimar said.
The latter then clarified that she was not “sure that the version given by Carolyn Correa would be the correct one”.
Today, Delimar has found her biological family and she shares the life of a man who is the father of an 11-year-old boy.
