Washington has authorized Ukraine to use its long-range missiles to strike Russian territory. This is a long-standing request from kyiv. Until now, the United States has been reluctant to take this step for fear of an escalation with Moscow, which considers such an attack would represent a declaration of war.

Hasty decision

This decision comes as Joe Biden prepares to leave the White House in January, leaving the reins to Donald Trump. If Mr. Biden firmly supports Ukraine, the arrival of the Republican president-elect, who has been criticizing American aid to Ukraine for months, could well change the situation.

A real turning point in the conflict?
- Ukraine has had American ATACMS missiles since the spring, but could only use them on its territory.
- Their range is around 300 km, which would not reach the Russian capital, Moscow.
- The British, who have also supplied long-range missiles to Ukraine, could follow suit.
-
These missiles will likely be used to strike the Kursk region of Russia, where North Korean soldiers are supporting Russian forces.
