for Emmanuel Macron, Vladimir Putin “does not want peace”

The French president reacted a few hours after a massive Russian attack on Ukraine. He did not rule out speaking again to his Russian counterpart, but only when the “context” is suitable.

For Emmanuel Macron, Vladimir Putin “does not want peace” in Ukraine “and is not ready to negotiate it”. The French head of state spoke this Sunday, November 17, while Ukraine suffered, the previous night, a “massive attack” with a series of Russian strikes on several cities in the country.

“In the context, I believe it is clear that President Putin's intentions are to intensify these fights, we have seen this for several weeks,” said Emmanuel Macron from Argentina.

“Whatever his statements, he does not want peace and is not ready to negotiate it,” he added.

The head of state has not ruled out speaking again to his Russian counterpart, but only when the “context” is suitable.

“Push Russia to stop fighting”

Emmanuel Macron sent his thoughts “for the Ukrainian people, their armies and their leaders”. “We must keep our commitments to the Ukrainians,” he said.

“Our duty is all to push Russia to stop fighting to negotiate peace on terms that respect international law,” said Emmanuel Macron.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this Saturday he wanted an end to the war in his country in 2025 by “diplomatic means”. However, he also felt that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin does not want “peace at all”.
