Held in check by Israel (0-0) at the Stade de France on Thursday, the Blues delivered a very dull performance which annoyed Didier Deschamps. After the first period, the coach expressed his dissatisfaction to his players in the locker room, as images from Téléfoot reveal.
A tasteless match in front of sparse stands: the meeting between the France team and Israel on Thursday at the Stade de France, as part of the group stage of the League of Nations, gave rise to a sad spectacle (0-0) . Faced with valiant opponents in defense, the Blues could not find the fault, lacking efficiency during a game without spark.
Enough to annoy Didier Deschamps who, from half-time, showed his discontent. “They fight like dogs. I’m not saying we’re not there but we can be there a little more anyway, eh”, thundered the coach in the locker room at the break. The images broadcast in Téléfoot on Sunday show the players silent, some with their heads lowered.
“We have to hurt them more than that”
“(Be) Strong on the rods! As soon as we can, (we go) forward. We have to hurt them more than that, guys. You know, you are capable of more. There it was a little too tiptoeing,” continued “DD” in a firm tone.
A speech which was not enough to give new impetus to his team. Held in a goalless draw for the fourth time this calendar year, the Blues equaled a sad twenty-year-old record but still ensured their qualification for the quarter-finals.
They will close their group stage against Italy on Sunday evening and can still hope to seek first place in the event of a big victory. Despite their last outing not at all convincing, Didier Deschamps wanted to put things into perspective on Saturday at a press conference: “We are 2nd in the FIFA rankings (…), we are here despite everything.”
