Russia's 'one of biggest air attacks' hits Ukraine's energy grid

Ukraine is undergoing “one of the biggest” air attacks launched by Russia this Sunday morning, the head of Ukrainian diplomacy, Andriï Sybiga, said on Sunday, with the country being targeted by strikes against its energy infrastructure. “Russia launched one of its largest air attacks: drones and missiles against peaceful cities, sleeping civilians, essential infrastructure,” denounced Andriï Sybiga.

The Ukrainian energy operator, DTEK, announced on Sunday “emergency power cuts” in the kyiv region and in two regions in the east of the country, due to this attack on an already fragile network. Earlier in the night, Energy Minister German Galushchenko announced that a “massive” Russian attack on the electricity system was underway.

Russian forces are “attacking electricity generation and transmission facilities throughout Ukraine,” he said. Explosions were heard in the early morning by AFP journalists in kyiv and near Sloviansk, in the Donetsk region.

As a security measure, Poland took off fighter jets during the attack. “Due to a massive attack by the Russian Federation carrying out cruise missile, ballistic missile and drone strikes against facilities in, among other places, western Ukraine, Operations of Polish and allied aircraft in our airspace have begun,” the Polish Central Command wrote on the social network X.
