Despite good resistance, the amateur players of FCSR Obernai ended up losing 3-0 against FC Metz, this Saturday, November 16, during the 7th round of the French Cup. The Alsatians held the match until the hour mark, and a headed goal from Sadibou Sané from a free kick. The Messins doubled the lead 10 minutes later through Simon Elisor, still with a header. Finally, Sadibou Sané definitely put his team away with a double just before the end of regulation time. Obernai really ended the match on his knees with a red card inflicted on central defender Salim Hambli in added time, although he was decisive earlier in the match to keep his goal.
A regional 2 team against a league 2 team, 5 divisions apart, it was a great challenge for the little Alsatian, since hosting a professional team was a first in the history of the club. And this, in a full stadium obviously, since the 3,000 seats in the stadium were sold in three short days. Enough to put pressure on, but also undoubtedly boost the players of Obernai, a century-old club and resident of the high regional level for many years.
Obernai was unable to ride its momentum: the club was undefeated in all competitions since the beginning of October and currently occupies 5th place in its regional 2 group. It must be said that Metz, 4th in Ligue 2 and accustomed to good performances in Coupe de France with four 1/8th finals over the last 10 years, has ended up living up to its status.
It was still a great popular success. Obernait had pulled out all the stops with 100 to 150 volunteers deployed to make the match a great football celebration.
