Even tired, Friborg Olympic always wins

Thibaut Petit’s men succeeded in their two main missions this Saturday evening at the Salle Saint-Léonard. The first, not to have any additional injuries and the second, to win against Monthey (106-90). Thanks to this success, they remain undefeated in the league after seven days and are at the top of the standings.

Eye-catching Valaisians

From the start of the match, Friborg Olympic struggled to defend against the incessant three-point shots from the Valais players. Thanks to several opposing blunders and a gala Williams-Nottage duo, the Friborg basketball players took the lead at half-time, they were already leading by more than 20 points. (64-42)

On returning from the locker room, the gap is made and victory seems promised to Olympic, but the Monthey players have heart and seem better physically than the Fribourgeoises. Natan Jurkovitz’s teammates defended less well and conceded a lot of long-range baskets (14 over the entire game), which allowed Monthey to reduce the score and win the last two quarters if they failed to win the match. (23-25, 19-23)

A cascade of injuries and soon a new recruit?

Since the start of the season, Friborg Olympic has scored 12 victories in 15 matches, in all competitions. An almost perfect performance for Friborg basketball players before this international break which comes at just the right time to allow some to rest.

Unfortunately, the break will not be used to recover players. Chimezie Offurum is out for at least 3 months after a knee injury, Kilian Martin is out 2 months and Massimiliano Dell’Acqua still has a few weeks left.

Faced with this, Friborg coach Thibaut Petit repeated it after the game: “We have to try to sign a new player, I would like to have him next week before the trip to Lugano. Someone who has the defensive impact like Chimezie (Offurum) could have had. If we want to perform and win trophies, we will need an additional tool at the defensive level.” The message has been sent, the question remains who will be the long-awaited recruit?
