Javier Aguirre Takes Responsibility for Mexico’s Defeat

The “Vasco” assured that he was the main responsible for El Tri’s 2-0 defeat against Honduras. Javier Aguirre believes in a comeback.

Javier Aguirre, coach of the Mexican national team, said this Friday following the 0-2 defeat against Honduras in the quarter-finals of the Concacaf Nations League, that he is the main culprit of this defeat and faith in a reversal of the situation during the return match in Toluca on the 19th.

“I’m not the type to blame anyone, the main person responsible for the defeat is me,” Aguirre stressed, downplaying a blow he received to the head from a can thrown by a fan at the end of the match.

“It’s football,” he said of the move, while emphasizing that “it was a clean, intense game, they deserved to win, all I can do is congratulate. I have nothing to complain about, it’s football, just another match, I insist, we must bounce back.

The Tri coach began the press conference with a message of solidarity “with the people of Honduras who are suffering from Sara,” the tropical storm that has been hitting the Central American country since Thursday.

He also expressed sympathy for Valencia and other parts of Spain affected by the storm and who “lost their families, lost their cars, part of their lives.”

“We were doing well, the 1-0 was a bit strange, a bad clearance from goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, and then, trying to equalize and making some moves, we had a few chances, and in the end we were a little disorganized and they scored 2-0,” he added.

He also stressed that in Toluca they hope to “reverse this situation” and admitted that he was upset by the result against Honduras.

“I am upset by the result because I believe that my players did not deserve to come away with a two-nil defeat. I really believe that (…) we were not clinical, as we should have been ,” he concluded.
