“We managed to get Michel out, but we couldn’t do anything for Annie, the mobile home caught fire”

“Michel is a long-time friend. He found himself without housing. I had been hosting him and his partner for several months to help them. It’s as if they were family,” says Pierre Mayer, the owner of the place. The place, located in the middle of large wet meadows along the Dordogne, is home to several buildings and caravans. It is known in the sector for hosting weddings, in particular.

Wood stove

“We spent the evening with family. Around 9 p.m., I came out of the house and heard screaming. Michel called for help. Their mobile home was on fire,” continues a person close to Mr. Mayer. With his son Mike, the man rushes. “We managed to get Michel out, he was screaming in pain. It was burning. It was horrible. We were about to go back to extract Annie, but an explosion rang out and everything burst into flames. We couldn’t do anything,” he testifies, in tears.

Quickly alerted, firefighters sent significant resources to the scene. When they arrived, the mobile home of around fifty square meters was in flames. The body of the deceased was found, charred, inside.

“The fire apparently started from a small wood stove which was in the mobile home,” the firefighters told us. We fear that Michel may have loaded it too much, because of the cold. Both were crippled, he suffered from a club foot and she was almost blind,” says Mr. Mayer. The night of Friday November 15 was one of the coolest since the beginning of autumn.
