The Netanyahu government has introduced a bill that would ban the display of the Palestinian flag at universities and Israeli-funded institutions, local media reported Thursday.
If passed, the law would apply to any institution funded by the state budget, including universities, and impose fines of up to 10,000 shekels ($2,700) and imprisonment of up to up to a year.
According to Israeli public broadcaster KAN, the Knesset Legislation Committee is expected to consider the bill in its next session on Sunday.
The bill, presented by Likud party member Nissim Vaturi, aims to ban the display of “hostile state” flags, including the Palestinian flag, in state-funded or publicly funded institutions. .
The law would provide that gatherings involving Palestinian flags can be dispersed and that demonstrators who wave them face up to a year in prison and a fine of at least 10,000 shekels.
More than 20% of Israeli citizens are Arab, and many Arab-Israelis wave the Palestinian flag during protests against Israeli policies in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Arab students at Israeli universities frequently stage protests against government policies, often with Palestinian flags.
