The riggers had the right reflex.

Friday morning, while they were carrying out a round of collecting recyclable waste on Chemin du Fort Benoît, near Chalezeule, the agents saw smoke coming from the dumpster.

They then immediately drove the truck to an isolated location and unloaded it. Alerted, the firefighters extinguished the fire even though the pile of waste had been dumped on the road. The police also intervened.

Recyclables in the yellow bin

No one was injured in the incident and the garbage collection equipment, owned by Grand Besançon Métropole (GBM), was not damaged.

However, the GBM waste management department is sounding the alarm. “The fire started in the dumpster, because waste had nothing to do there,” explains Matthias Mennecier, director of the service.

The fire was caused by the compression of the small battery of a toy that had been thrown into the yellow trash can. These bins being filled with cardboard and paper, the slightest spark can cause a flame to start.

“This is still the fourth fire that we have recorded in 2024,” says the community service director who calls on the residents of Bison to be vigilant in terms of sorting.

Certain waste not intended for the yellow bin or the final waste bin must be returned to a recycling center. “Even when there is no material damage or injuries, these disasters have a financial impact on our services, because we have to mobilize new vehicles for collection and reorganize our routes,” adds Matthias Mennecier. Given the recurrence of events, a new disaster should not cause more serious consequences.
