Marine Le Pen denounces a “political death penalty”

The prosecutor's office requested five years in prison as well as five years of ineligibility against Marine Le Pen in the trial of the parliamentary assistants of the National Rally. “This indictment is revolting,” confided the three-time presidential candidate to TF1 this Friday, November 15.

According to the head of the RN deputies, this indictment “calls for incommensurate convictions (…) going so far as to request the political death penalty with provisional execution“. A fine of 300,000 euros was also requested against her. “We are innocent of the facts and we had not violated any French laws”, also affirmed Marine Le Pen. “We did not get a cent more than we were entitled to to hire assistants,” the MP also declared.

The prosecution asked the court to combine the ineligibility sentence with provisional execution, which means that it would apply immediately, even if Marine Le Pen appealed. “The idea (…) that we can deprive [les Français] of their choice is a very violent attack on democracy“, she further underlined.

Asked about a desire to “put pressure on the justice system”, while the RN notably launched an online petition to protest against these requisitions of the prosecution, Marine Le Pen responded “Never in life”. “But we had to give the opportunity to those who were outraged […] to express this indignation, but in the most peaceful way possible, that is to say through a petition”, she finally justified herself.
