A fun and crazy race. For the 7th time, the Rafeaux de la Baleine race took place this Saturday, June 22, 2024 in Luc-sur-Mer, on the Côte de Nacre (Calvados). With a sea water at 14°C !
Several hundred spectators present
Several hundred spectators had made the trip, under the piercing sun. At 2 p.m., the 13 teams competing on the test wandered with their makeshift handmade raft“built using recycled materials”, on the dike to join the Luc’s pier, just reopened for the summer before work. Among the contenders: a crew with the mayor of Dover and that of Colomby-Angerny, two crews from the Caen-Hérouville canoe-kayak club or several associations from Luc-sur-Mer.
After a presentation of the different crews, the start of the race was given at 2:20 p.m. Objective : make a round trip at sea by turning around two buoys.
“No one takes themselves seriously, there’s a great atmosphere”
In this little game, it’sTranslutine teamdisguised to pay homage to the ancient Olympics, which imposed itself in 7 minutes. For his second participation after his 4th place last year. “It’s hard, but it’s great. Sailing against the wind and negotiating the buoys well is essential,” say the winners of the day.
A feeling shared by all participants.
It still hurts your arms! It’s a really good race. No one takes themselves seriously, the goal is to have a laugh and that creates cohesion at the club. There is a great atmosphere.

Last, even the crew from Luc’s youth area had fun, and finished the race for the first time. “The raft is still a little light, but it’s great progress to finish“, says Alain, one of the volunteers in the youth space. “The main thing is to enjoy and enjoy“.
