It was in the middle of the night of Friday November 15, 2024, shortly after 3 a.m., that the firefighters were called to an accident on the Veulettes road, the D10, in Cany-Barville.
An accident, involving a heavy goods vehicle, whose dramatic toll could have been even worse.
Partly collapsed
On site, they discovered that a 44-ton truck empty of any cargo had hit a one-story house, part of which several meters long had collapsed to the ground.
The Rescue Support and Search Unit, the SMUR and the Gendarmerie were immediately dispatched there.
They found three victims there. The driver of the heavy goods vehicle, unconscious, incarcerated and qualified as an absolute emergency as well as two residents of the building qualified as a relative emergency.
Shortly after, the driver, a 55-year-old man, was declared dead although it was ultimately not necessary to hospitalize the two residents of the house. In total, six people will have to be rehoused, notably by the Cany-Barville town hall.
Two traffic axes, the D925 and D10, had to be cut. The heavy goods vehicle should be evacuated during the morning while the building will be inspected by an expert to decide what actions to take.
