The number of fines at SNCB increased last year. The rail transport company counted 497,000, but less than 10% of those fined paid their fine.
The SNCB has recorded 497,000 fines for not possessing a transport ticket valid in 2023, we read on Friday in the newspapers of the Sudpresse group. This represents a total of 44 million euros.
In 2022, there were 374,000 fines for a total amount of 28 million euros.
Note that less than 10% of the fines claimed last year were paid: only 3.9 million were collected out of the 44 million euros claimed.
Some 66,000 fines were canceled because travelers had forgotten their subscription or were in possession of an illegible transport ticket. And 87,000 passengers actually paid.
Fraud in 2023 represents a shortfall of 26 million euros, according to SNCB, which listed 28,000 repeat offenders last year (compared to 20,000 in 2022).
