War in Ukraine: “massive” Russian attack in Odessa, one person killed

UA “massive” Russian air attack overnight killed at least one person in Odessa, southern Ukraine, Ukrainian emergency services reported early Friday.

“Odessa has once again suffered a massive enemy attack (…) According to preliminary data, one person died” and 10 others were injured, including two children, emergency services said on Telegram.

The deceased is “a 35-year-old woman who was sleeping near a window”, according to a publication by the mayor of this important Black Sea port, Gennadyi Trukhanov, on the same social network.

According to the regional governor, Oleg Kiper, “an apartment building in the center of Odessa was destroyed, apartments caught fire, towers and around thirty vehicles were damaged” as a result of the attack.

Photos released by emergency services show rescuers trying to put out the fire in a three-story building and caring for an elderly woman.

Shortly before 6:00 a.m. local time (04:00 GMT) on Friday, the Ukrainian Air Force also warned that six Russian Tu-95 bombers were flying in a southeast direction from the Olenia base, in the northwest of the Russia.

The Tu-95 are long-range bombers developed under the Soviet Union and capable of carrying cruise missiles.

Russian forces have recently stepped up attacks on southern Ukraine, including damaging civilian ships at ports in the Odessa region, while kyiv has stepped up attacks on military and energy targets in Russian-controlled regions. Russia.

Moscow forces shot down 51 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 36 in the Krasnodar region (southwest), the Russian Defense Ministry reported Friday morning on Telegram. The governor of this territory, Veniamine Kondratiev, reported a “massive attack” which caused no casualties.

For months, Ukrainian authorities have been asking their Western allies to provide them with more air defense systems to repel Russian attacks.

The head of the Russian Security Council, Sergei Shoigu, for his part urged kyiv’s Western allies to begin negotiations with Moscow if they want to put an end to the attacks against Ukrainians.
