The Pohénégamook Fire Safety Department was called to intervene on Saint-Vallier Street for a fire in a garage on November 13 around 8:30 p.m. The damage caused to the building was significant.
“These are ashes that had been thrown in the trash. It took place in front of the garage, because they were stored there,” explains the director of the Pohénégamook SSI, Dean Thériault.
When firefighters arrived, flames were escaping from the small building. They concentrated on putting out the fire. The director did not fear a spread since his department intervened quickly.
Around ten firefighters were on the scene. They were back at the barracks around 10:15 a.m.
Dean Thériault emphasizes that in his sector, the SSI intervenes at least once a year for a fire caused by hot ashes.
He says the best way to dispose of ashes is to put them in a metal bucket. It is advisable to put a lid on it and store it for two to three weeks away from the house, before transferring it to the trash.
