Thus, this XTL diesel has been available in stations since the beginning of October. A fuel obtained from various resources, such as natural gas, biomass, plastic waste, vegetable oils or even animal fats. Its production is far from that of classic B7 diesel, often using oil.
The fact remains that this different constitution from conventional diesel has an advantage. That of reducing the ecological impact when using compatible engines. This XTL makes it possible to reduce CO2 emissions from engines using it by 70 to 90%, compared to the B7.
An important step in reducing CO2 emissions from the use of thermal engines. Enough to convince users to switch to this fuel, similar to E85 for gasoline engines? However, one point still poses a concern…
Clean diesel at a high price
It's about price. This XTL diesel costs between 15 and 20 cents more per liter than conventional diesel. Enough to put it around €1.8/L, for users. A price similar to that of SP98 gasoline, among the most expensive fuels in France.
This argument could be a barrier for users. However, this can be explained by several factors. First, it is subject to traditional taxation, while other fuels, more virtuous than conventional energies, are sometimes less taxed. Which increases prices.
The production of this XTL diesel is also limited at present. Enough to help keep prices high. We can bet that this will change in the future, thanks to the increase in production, the development of this energy and a possible drop in prices.

To summarize
Since October 1, a new type of diesel, called XTL, has been available at some service stations in France. Less polluting, it nevertheless suffers from a major drawback: its price. The latter is much higher than that of conventional diesel.
