Côte-d'Or: €56,000 raised during the auction of Burgundy wine appellation signs

Tuesday, November 12, in (Côte-d'Or), 600 old Burgundy wine appellation signs were put up for auction, reports “ 3”. The sale exceeded all expectations and raised €56,000, enough to finance a library and a documentation center at the Cité des Climats et vins de Bourgogne.

It was an original auction to say the least which took place in Beaune (Côte-d'Or), in the Cité des Climats et vins de Bourgogne, on Tuesday November 12. Nearly 50 buyers on site, and several hundred online, snapped up 600 Burgundy wine appellation panels, reports France 3 Burgundy-Franche-Comté.

Among these signs, formerly installed on the wine route for motorists, 29 of them bear the names of great wines. If these thirty-year-old signs were put up for sale, it is because they have been replaced by more modern versions on the roads of Burgundy.

Own “the symbol of a great wine” at home

Starting prices ranged between €30 and €500 depending on the rarity and condition of the panels. During the sale, some crossed the €3,000 mark, like that of Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru, sold for €3,500. In total, nearly €56,000 was raised thanks to this sale. The profits will be donated to the Cité des Climats et vins de Bourgogne to finance a library and a documentation center.

Auctioneer Jérôme Duvillard, responsible for the sale, was delighted with the success of the event. He explains the craze for wine appellation signs, by the desire to have at home “the symbol of an official, great vintage”, even if the plate in question “has sometimes taken a hit from the tractor” .
