COP29: Chad calls for urgent doubling of climate financing

The Minister of the Environment, Fisheries and Sustainable Development, Hassan Bakhit Djamous, participated on November 13, 2024 in a special ministerial session on the impacts of climate change and water resources.

The opportunity for him to present the current situation in Chad which is facing the effects of climate change in all its forms and its pressures on the Lake Chad basin.

For him, the scale of the challenges far exceeds national capacities. “That is why, today I am calling for an urgent doubling of climate finance for watershed conservation and restoration initiatives in Africa; reinforced support for regional initiatives such as the Great Green Wall which have proven their effectiveness in the integrated management of natural resources and the stabilization of fragile areas; the creation of a specific financing mechanism for cross-border basins in crisis, combining climate adaptation and conflict prevention and the strengthening of technical and technological capacities to improve the monitoring and management of water resources”, launches the representative of the Head of the State at Cop29.

The Minister of the Environment returned to the situation of Lake Chad in these terms: “The fate of Lake Chad is emblematic of the challenges facing many water basins around the world. Our response to this crisis will not only determine the future of millions of people in the region, but will also serve as a test of our collective ability to protect water resources in the face of climate change.”
