At just 19 years old, Real Madrid hopeful Marc Cucalon was forced to give up professional . The fault lies with a bacteria caught during an operation on his right knee.

“My life completely changed on September 6, 2022.” That day, during a Youth League match against Celtic, Marc Cucalon, a young Real Madrid midfielder, suffered a very strong tackle which forced him to go out. The observation is hard to swallow, but not insurmountable: tear of the cruciate ligament in the right knee. A fairly serious injury that required an operation and a long convalescence period of nine months.

During the surgery, the Alfajarin, Spain native caught bacteria. The latter attacks the cartilage of his right knee. Two years after the tackle, faced with pain and complications, Marc Cucalon said stop. “This injury forced me to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to football,” he said in a long message posted on Instagram.

“I fought physically and mentally with all my strength”

The Spaniard continued: “In these last two years I fought physically and mentally with all my strength and tried everything in my power to enjoy this sport again, but it didn't work. I couldn't get over it.”

Arriving at Real Madrid in 2016, Marc Cucalon rose through the ranks of the youth teams, where he often wore the captain's armband. He also played several Youth League matches, the Under-19 Champions League.

Below his publication, former glories of Casa Blanca paid tribute to him. The Brazilian Marcelo said: “All my best wishes, my child”. Alvaro Arbeloa, who coached him with the Madrid reserve, seemed touched by the announcement: “You don't know how many times this match comes to mind. You know better than anyone, you deserve the best, Marc .”
