Benoît* (20 years old) was tried in his absence at the criminal hearing on Tuesday November 12, 2024, at the court of Caen (Calvados). He was concerned by three procedures which the court ordered to be joined.
Dumpster fires and thefts
One evening in January 2023, around 8:30 p.m., the young man was arrested after putting the fire at two containers trash can in a street in Caen. Accompanied by a 14-year-old teenager, he threw firecrackers and admitted that it was not the first time he had set trash cans on fire. He had already done it during demonstrations.
A few days later, we found him in Mondeville, passing the cash registers of the Intersport store without paying. He is in possession of gloves and underwear as well as a screwdriver which he used to remove the locks. This time, two minors accompanied him.
Around twenty fines in two months
Finally, he usually uses public transport in Caen (bus and tram) without a transport ticket. The procedure retains the dates from January to February 2024. During this period of time, it totalized around twenty fines drawn up by Keolis controllers. Benoît does not work, has no income and lives with his father.
The prosecutor believes he is on a dangerous slope.
Despite these three procedures, he does not come. He is freewheeling and does anything. He encourages young people to steal and set fires and for him, it is normal to travel for free. He has just turned 20, he needs a deterrent sentence, otherwise we risk losing him.
Benoît received a five-month suspended prison sentence and 24 months of probation with an obligation to work. He will have to reimburse Caen la mer for the containers burned and compensate Keolis with 2,200 euros.
