Quite a surprise from the International Automobile Federation. A few days before the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the FIA announced this Tuesday the departure of Niels Wittich. The latter was appointed racing director of Formula 1 at the start of 2022, in response to the huge controversy during the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix over the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. The FIA explained in a press release: “The FIA can confirm that Niels Wittich has resigned as F1 racing director in order to pursue new opportunities. Niels carried out his many responsibilities as race director with professionalism and dedication. We thank him for his commitment and wish him the best for the future. »
Rui Marques replaces him
Appointed in 2022, initially alongside Eduardo Freitas, Niels Wittich had been alone in charge since the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix. To replace him, the FIA decided to call on Rui Marques, race director of F2 and F3. He will be on duty this weekend during the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
