Duran Lantink wins the 2024 Karl Lagerfeld Prize – Select

On September 10, 2024, the Karl Lagerfeld Prize was awarded to Dutch designer Duran Lantink, a talent who is attracting more and more attention in the fashion world.

This award, presented by the British actor Robert Pattinson during the LVMH 2024 prize ceremony, adds to the already impressive track record of Lantink, who won the ANDAM special prize in 2023. “Winning this award is really great, because I will be able to move forward with my brand”he said in an interview for Numberadding that he plans to focus on accessories soon, with plans for bags, shoes, eyewear and jewelry.

A provocative style

Duran Lantink first made an impression in 2018 with the music video Pink of Janelle Monáewhere the singer wore a pair of daring vagina-shaped pants, designed by Lantink. This iconic garment has traveled the world, representing the vision of fashion that is both playful and militant. “I don't want to be too camp, but I like to play and flirt with that style. My goal is simply to create exciting things that reflect my values”he confided. According to him, “joy is a form of acceptance, intrinsically linked to queerness”a message inspired by his own journey.

An upcycling practice inspired by his childhood

Born into an open and creative environment, Lantink grew up reinventing clothes found at home, influenced by a free-style mother and surrounded by queer figures. He quotes Walter Van Beirendonck et Jean-Paul Gaultier among his influences, but his style remains unique, combining sobriety and radicality. In 2019, he launched his own label and stands out for his practice ofupcyclinga concept that he formalized in 2023 during his first fashion show at the Fashion Week de .

Silhouettes that question norms

Lantink plays with the shapes and proportions of the body, recalling the audacity of the Comme des Garçons spring-summer 1997 fashion show. His creations, often composed of padding marking the shoulders, hips and chests, explore the body through openwork tulle and cropped lengths. He favors austere colors which accentuate the power and purity of his pieces. These aesthetic choices have won over artists like Billie Eilish et Beyoncéand his work is now acclaimed by the industry.

A vision for the future

The Karl Lagerfeld Prize allows Lantink to give a new dimension to his brand. He plans to develop lines of accessories, an area that has always attracted him but which he has not been able to explore until now. His ambition is to “pursue the creation of pieces that embody the free and provocative spirit” that defines his career. With a dazzling career and a strong vision, Duran Lantink has established himself as one of the most promising creators of his generation. His next collections are highly anticipated, and the fashion industry is ready to follow his evolution.
