the United Kingdom commits to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035

At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, this Tuesday, the United Kingdom announced a commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035.

The United Kingdom confirms. Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged this Tuesday to reduce his greenhouse gas emissions by “at least 81%” by 2035 compared to 1990 as part of his climate ambition. This is a strong signal sent to the international community.

Present at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, he called on “all parties to present ambitious objectives”. “A global problem also requires global partnership and responsible international cooperation,” said the head of the British government.

TOWARDS CARBON NEUTRALITY IN 2050?

In 2015, the United Kingdom already committed to reducing its emissions by 68% by 2030 compared to 1990, and to achieving carbon neutrality in 2050.

It is “currently at almost 50% reduction in emissions,” climatologist Corinne Le Quéré, member of the Commission on Climate Change (CCC) and former president of the High Council for the Climate, told AFP.

However, the country does not seem to be on the right track in achieving its reduction objectives, despite recent measures on wind energy or the exit from coal. COP29 takes place from November 11 to 22.
