Deadly floods in Spain
Regions of Spain are preparing to experience further rain, while significant flooding has already occurred on November 11 in the city of Almeria, Andalusia. These floods accompanied by torrents of mud, as we can see in these amateur images (new window)were caused by a violent storm. A new impressive meteorological episode in Spain, a country seriously affected around ten days ago.
Valencia in the rain again
Indeed, Spain is barely recovering from the floods in the Valencia region, which killed more than 220 people and caused extensive material damage. However, certain provinces, starting with the Valencian community, should not experience any respite. In a press release (new window) of November 11, the Aemet meteorological agency took stock of the upcoming risks of “torrential rain and very heavy downpours”.
From November 13, we can expect “very heavy rainfall, with the probability of locally torrential and even persistent rains in Malaga, with quantities that could exceed 180 mm, on the south coast of Valencia and the north coast of Alicante, where 100 mm could be reached”, as well as “heavy to very heavy precipitation, without excluding torrential rains on the coast of Granada, the north coast of Valencia, the coast of Castellón and the south coast of Tarragona”. These regions are therefore placed on orange rain alert, and rain and thunderstorm for the island of Mallorca. Aemet expects the episode to end by Saturday, November 16, “although the uncertainty about (its) evolution is very high”.
Highly criticized for their lack of anticipation and management of the disaster, the Spanish authorities have voted for several areas of financial aid to support the victims. After an initial envelope of 10.6 billion euros, a new investment of nearly 3.8 billion euros was announced on November 11 by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
