On Tuesday, the senior Russian official and former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu declared Tuesday to the head of Chinese diplomacy Wang Yi that their two countries must counter the American policy of “double containment carried out against Russia and China by the United States and its satellites.
Senior Russian official and former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday that their two countries must counter US policy “containment” against them. Speaking to Wang Yi, the Russian Security Council Secretary stressed the need for their two countries to “counter the policy of double containment carried out against Russia and China by the United States and its satellites”.
“The global partnership and strategic cooperation (Sino-Russian, Editor’s note) represent a model of collaboration between two powers in today’s world”declared Mr. Shoigu, quoted by Russian news agencies. The two men spoke in Beijing during discussions presented as focused on “security”in the context of the war in Ukraine and the military rapprochement between Russia and North Korea, after Pyongyang announced on Tuesday morning the ratification of a historic bilateral defense agreement with Russia.
Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun told his Russian counterpart Andrei Beloussov in October that their two armies must “deepen their strategic collaboration”without however linking his remarks to the war in Ukraine, in which China has no intention of participating.
Strengthened cooperation
China, which has never condemned the Kremlin for the invasion of Ukraine and whose strong economic and military ties with Russia are viewed with suspicion by the West, presents itself as a mediator in the conflict. Beijing regularly calls for peace talks and respect for the territorial integrity of all countries, including Ukraine.
Masi NATO denounced the economic support, according to it crucial, provided by China to Russia in its war against Ukraine. In response, China urged the Atlantic alliance to stop “to incite confrontation” between blocks. Beijing also regularly accuses Westerners of “throw fuel on the fire” by continually supplying weapons to Ukraine.
Beijing and Moscow have nevertheless strengthened their military and security cooperation since the launch of the Russian assault in Ukraine in February 2022. President Vladimir Putin and his counterpart Xi Jinping appear to be very close partners.
After his stay in Beijing, Sergei Shoigu is also due to attend this week the Zhuhai Air Show (south China), the largest of its kind in the Asian country, where the stealth fighter jet “fifth generation” Russia’s most advanced Su-57 carried out a presentation flight on Tuesday.
