A violent fire hit the Barcarès Christmas village this Monday, November 11. Several chalets were destroyed by the flames. But the village should open its doors next week.
The flames almost took away the magic of Christmas. An impressive fire broke out in the gardens of Lydia in Barcarès this Monday, November 11 at 4:28 a.m.as reported by the Pyrénées-Orientales Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS 66) on the social network
The fire spread over 3000 m²
“It is with sadness and dismay that the town of Barcarès informs that a fire broke out last night in the gardens of Lydia, affecting several chalets being installed. We express our deep support for the merchants affected by this incident,” declare, in a press release, the organizers of this Christmas village which has been taking place for 25 years.
In detail, the fire, which extended over 3,000 m²impacted seven wooden chalets, three maritime caissons and four refrigerated trucks, according to information from the SDIS. “The fire was fortunately contained to a limited area of the site,” inform the organizers. In total, 61 firefighters were mobilized. They managed to confine it at 7 a.m., thus making it possible to protect the boat Lydia.
The Christmas village will still open
Despite this fire, the Christmas village should take place. “We are doing everything we can to enable the opening of the Christmas village next weekand let's do what is necessary to restore part of the installations,” indicate the organizers. According to SDIS 66, “a long work of clearing and cleaning is to be expected in order to secure the site and assess all the damage”.
For the moment, the origin of this fire “remains unknown and is the subject of investigations”, specifies the SDIS 66. “The causes of this fire are probably accidentalbut we remain awaiting the results of the ongoing investigation,” say the organizers, for their part, before adding: “We will keep the public informed of any developments regarding the situation.”
