Remembrance Day, which is celebrated each year on the armistice of the First World War, is an opportunity to remember the sacrifices made with their lives by many Canadian soldiers throughout history.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon were present at the national ceremony held Monday morning at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.

Thousands of citizens also came to pay their respects and were able to place a poppy in tribute to the soldiers.

“My husband who died last year had a father who was a hero of the First World War. He had a serious head injury and suffered throughout his life. So I am here to remember my husband, his father and all the other generations who risked their lives for us,” testified a citizen present in the federal capital.

“We must not forget and remember these incredible people who sacrificed and made enormous efforts to protect me and so that I, a Canadian citizen, could enjoy my freedom,” said a young man.

The 100e anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force is also celebrated on this Remembrance Day.
