Suzy Camus never thought she would witness this scene. Yet this Monday, November 11, 2024, she watched, totally helpless, as her chalet in the Barcarès Christmas Village went up in smoke. She is one of the restaurateurs directly impacted by the fire which, during the night, ravaged seven wooden chalets, three metal boxes and four refrigerated trucks.
“I saw everything melt before my eyes, my entire chalet, everything I had. Everything melted like plastic. And, in the end, there was nothing left“, Suzy Camus immediately warns: this Monday evening, November 11, she is still in shock from the scene which took place before her eyes shortly after 5:30 a.m. that same morning. It was at this time that a colleague calls her to warn her, while she is still asleep: her chalet called Après-ski, one of the largest in the Barcarès Christmas Village, is engulfed in flames. At first, I must admit that I thought it was a joke.”. But this is not a joke in bad taste. When she arrived there, she was seized with fear. “It’s horrible. It looks like a bomb went through there. Our chalet was the last to burn. Apparently, the emergency services were hopeful of saving him. But when the bell tower collapsed, I understood that it was over. And I watched it burn away. Totally helpless“.
We were supposed to receive the last goods this Tuesday, but we had already equipped everything
The coincidence of the calendar is all the more cruel since, the day before at 9 p.m., she had just completed all the installations necessary for the operation of the Après Ski. This large restaurant of 350 m² spread over two floors, normally accommodates – on average – 150 to 200 seats per service. “We had to refuse customers on Catalan holidays“Such a machine therefore requires significant technical resources behind the scenes, in the kitchen.”We were due to receive the last goods this Tuesday, November 12. But we had already equipped everything: the professional kitchen, the professional pastry shop, the ovens… But the worst part of this story is that it is the same operating equipment that we use for our beach club. ‘summer. But… we have nothing left. Everything, everything, everything burned“.
This Monday evening, Suzy Camus does not want to let herself be completely overwhelmed by despair. “I am a very positive person. I am still relieved that the entire Christmas Village was not affected. It could have been much worse. The only thing I can hope is that the municipal team finds a solution. Even if, this evening, I don’t see what we could do. But I trust them. They have revenge to take for this curse.”.
