Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced Monday, November 11, the adoption ofa new package of 110 support measures for disaster victims deadly floods of October 29 in the Valencia region, representing an investment of around 3.8 billion euros. Farmers will receive 200 million euros in aid. The support measures already announced last week will be extended to a greater number of people and goods.
“The government is present and will be present, with all the necessary means, and as long as necessary (…) we will continue the work to restore normality in the areas hit by this natural disaster,” promised the head of the socialist government at a press conference.
The government had already announced last week a first aid plan of 10.6 billion euros after this climatic disaster which left more than 220 dead. The first wave of aid announced last week included support for SMEs, self-employed workers and households who have suffered death, disability and whose homes or property have been damaged.
Tax breaks, a three-month deferral of mortgage repayments, loans and central government spending for the huge clean-up jobs facing local councils were also announced.
Widespread anger, aroused by the supposed mismanagement of the authorities before and after the floods, resulted in mass demonstrations on Saturday, November 9, the largest of which took place in Valencia where some 130,000 people gathered.
The National Weather Service has planned to new heavy rains in the Valencia region this week.
