Donald Trump spoke with Vladimir Putin

Donald Trump spoke on Thursday November 7, 2024 with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to anonymous sources cited by the American daily The Washington Post. The Republican reportedly asked the Russian leader not to provoke an escalation in Ukraine.

A spokesperson for the US president-elect's transition team said it did not “commenting on private calls between President Trump and other leaders”. According to the Washington PostDonald Trump and Vladimir Putin discussed the goal of peace on the European continent. The Republican said he hopes to have follow-up conversations to discuss “resolution of the war in Ukraine soon”.

“Positive signals”

The Kremlin estimated earlier in the day that Donald Trump had sent during the campaign “positive signals” regarding the conflict. Russia notes that he mentioned a possible ” peace “ and did not show “desire to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia”.

Donald Trump would also have reminded Vladimir Putin of the extent of the American military presence in Europe. This is the first telephone conversation between the two men since the businessman won the US presidential election last Tuesday.

Shortly afterwards, the German Chancellery indicated that Olaf Scholz had spoken to Donald Trump on Sunday and that they had both said “ready to work together for the return of peace to Europe”.

The Ukrainian president described this telephone exchange as« excellent » and had “agreed to maintain a close dialogue” with Donald Trump. But according to a highly placed Ukrainian source, the two leaders did not “not really discussed anything substantial, it was a greeting conversation”.
