The celebration of the Copa do Brasil title for Flamengo brought many festivities and farewells this Sunday (10). After Gabigol announced that he would not stay with Flamengo for the next season, the club’s vice president of football Marcos Braz revealed the situation regarding the striker in an exclusive interview with Rádio Tupi.
“No one wanted him here. I love him, and we’ve tried to do everything we can, but today is not the day to talk about it; it’s a day to celebrate,” Braz said.
Gabigol joined Flamengo in 2019 and has always been essential in the finals. In total, the striker has 16 goals in 18 finals wearing the famous Rubro-Negro jersey.
In 2019, his first year with the club, the striker scored both of Flamengo’s goals against River Plate-ARG in the Libertadores final. With a 2–1 victory, the team clinched their second title in the competition, winning $12 million (around R$48 million at the time). Including bonuses from other stages, the club’s total revenue reached R$77.5 million.

During the Recopa Sudamericana 2020, Gabriel shone as top scorer and assistor. Although he did not feature in the first leg against Independiente del Valle in Ecuador, which ended in a 2-2 draw, he was the difference in the second leg. The striker scored one goal and played a crucial role in the other two goals scored by Rubro-Negro, leading to the victory. For this competition, the club won 2 million dollars (8.6 million R$ at the time).
In the 2021 Supercopa do Brasil against Palmeiras, Gabigol’s contributions were also vital. He scored one of Flamengo’s goals in the regulation match which ended 2-2 and converted his penalty. The Rubro-Negro won the title, receiving a R$5 million prize from the CBF.

In 2021, the striker also tormented Fluminense in both Campeonato Carioca final matches, helping Flamengo to another title. In the first leg, he scored the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with the Tricolor. In the second leg, he scored two goals in Flamengo’s 3–1 win over their rivals, securing another trophy for the team. However, there was no financial reward for this competition.
And it doesn’t stop there. In 2022, Gabriel was crucial in another Libertadores triumph, scoring the only goal in the match against Athletico-PR. With this victory, the Rubro-Negro pocketed $23.5 million (around R$125 million at the time), of which $16 million came exclusively from the final.
Now he has the chance to once again etch his name in the club’s history, this time through the Copa do Brasil. The striker scored twice in Flamengo’s 3-1 win over Atlético-MG at the Maracanã in the first leg of the final. If Filipe Luís’ team wins the title, it will receive more than R$90 million in prize money, including R$73.5 million awarded for the final alone.
