Iran calls to exclude Israel from UN after Syria strike

Iran has called for an arms embargo against Israel and its exclusion from the United Nations, after a strike in Syria killed nine people on Sunday according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH). The OSDH said that at least nine people, including a Hezbollah commander, were killed in an Israeli strike south of Damascus on an apartment belonging to members of the Lebanese movement allied with Iran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said “strongly condemned the brutal attack carried out today by the Zionist regime against a residential building in Damascus”. He also called for action against Israel, asking “an arms embargo” and his “exclusion from the United Nations”.

Frequent keystrokes

Since the start of Syria’s civil war in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on the neighboring country targeting the Syrian army and Tehran-backed groups, including Hezbollah, deployed in support of Syrian government forces.

The frequency of these strikes has increased since Israel entered into open war against Hezbollah in Lebanon on September 23. Israel, which rarely comments on such strikes, recently targeted crossings between Syria and Lebanon, accusing Hezbollah of using them to smuggle weapons from Syria.

Sworn enemy of Iran, Israel is at war against Palestinian Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon, two movements allied with Tehran, which also advocates a ceasefire on these two fronts.
