: Canadian Rebecca Marino wins her first WTA title in Midland

Rebecca Marino joined the list of Canadians who lifted a trophy this week by winning the Midland tournament on Sunday with her dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory over American Alycia Parks.

Denis Shapovalov also triumphed in Belgrade yesterday, while Gabriela Dabrowski was crowned in doubles at the WTA Finals.

Marino thus obtained her first individual title on the WTA circuit, but her fourth of the year after winning three times on the ITF circuit. Thanks to her victory, the 33-year-old Vancouverite will move to 104th place on Monday, after starting the year in 185th position.

After an elimination in the first round at the Merida Open, she won five in a row to earn the trophy. She defeated Robin Anderson, Louis Chirico, Alina Korneeva and Lesya Tsurenko.

Sunday’s duel lasted only 57 minutes. Marino won 81.3% of her points on the first serve ball and 60% on the second serve, a big contrast with her rival.

Marino (6th seed) also beat Parks (3rd) another time earlier this year, at the ITF tournament in Arcadia.
