The Standard takes on water at La Gantoise

Ghent put an end to its scoring difficulties in the last league matches on Sunday. The Buffalos took over a Standard lacking inspiration by inflicting a generous 5-0 this Sunday. The match was briefly disrupted by the collapse of Noah Fadiga.

In the cup and at European level, the Buffalos have recorded good results in recent weeks. But in the Jupiler Pro League, coach Vrancken’s team experienced a down period. For three consecutive league matches, Ghent failed to score. But against Standard, things quickly changed.

Les Rouches have proven their defensive solidity this season. Goalkeeper Epolo kept his team on their feet on several occasions, as he did again in Ghent on an attempt by Delorge. But the young goalkeeper also regularly makes mistakes. On a corner, for example, he did not move the ball wide enough, which allowed Watanabe to open the scoring.

A scare for Fadiga

It’s a hard blow for coach Leko’s team, but Standard didn’t let it get them down. Through Zeqiri and Ayensa, among others, he created a few chances to equalize. Ghent held on and just before half-time, the victory seemed already assured: Dean, the crowd’s favorite, doubled the lead with a beautiful volley.

Moments later, Fadiga collapsed on the touchline. Given his heart history, we immediately feared the worst. But the corridor player quickly regained his senses. Ghent said there were no cardiological causes behind the incident.

Epolo’s blunder(s)

Just after the break, La Gantoise ended the game. Epolo first caught an attempt from Dean well, but then had to give in to a shot from Brown. Shortly after, the score was even 4-0. Sonko hit the crossbar for the second time in the match, but Dean was well placed to head the ball home.

Finally, Standard would concede a fifth goal following another embarrassing blunder by the Liège goalkeeper. La Gantoise therefore finally won with a score of 5-0.
