What is the link between the Château de Chambord, the Louvre and the Cévennes?

From the Cévennes to the Louvre and the Château de Chambord: a historical adventure.

Today, we return to an extraordinary adventure that connects the Cévennes to the Louvre Museum and the sumptuous Château de Chambord. This story, told by the writer Catherine Velle, daughter of Frédérique Hébrard and granddaughter of André Chamson, is highlighted in the documentary film by Margaux Chouraqui, “Les memoires de la guerre du Louvre”.

In 1939, Lucie Mazauric, archivist at the Louvre Museum, under the visionary direction of Jacques Jaujard, participated in the evacuation of works of art from the Louvre to the Château de Chambord to protect them from the ravages of the imminent war. This evacuation plan, carefully prepared even before the start of the conflict, made it possible to secure some of the most precious works in the world.

Catherine Velle's story highlights the contrast between the majesty of the Château de Chambord and the modest living conditions of the team responsible for looking after these treasures. Despite the difficulties, these men and women demonstrated exemplary courage and determination, choosing to act in the face of extraordinary circumstances.

This poignant testimony reminds us of the importance of heritage preservation and the dedication of those who, often in the shadows, contributed to saving priceless works. Next time you visit the Louvre, think of these quiet heroes who risked their lives to protect our cultural heritage
