The “do you know” of the day. Do you know in which country “Pont-à-Mousson” became a common name?

In French, this is called antonomasis: a proper noun is transformed into a common noun, like madeleine, for example which comes from a cook from Commercy, according to legend, Madeleine Paulmier. The term “pontamousson” is used in Russian to designate a water supply pipe.

This transformation finds its origins at the heart of the industrial history of the Lorraine region. At the end of the 19th century, the director of PAM SA bet on the use of cast iron for water supply.

This pipe was notable for its robustness and ability to withstand high pressures, making it ideal for water supply systems in large industrial cities. The exceptional quality of these pipes quickly attracted attention beyond French borders, thanks in particular to the work of Camille Cavallier.

Exports throughout the world also concern the Russian Empire, where the pipe became part of everyday language.

PAM SA, which became Saint-Gobain PAM, was able to adapt its products and evolve its manufacturing technologies, which allowed it to become a world leader in its field.
