Canadian Denis Shapovalov won his first ATP title in five years on Saturday by defeating Hamad Medjedovic in two identical sets of 6-4 in the final of the tournament in Belgrade, Serbia.
This is the second title of Shapovalov’s career, who had not experienced such euphoria since his coronation at the Stockholm tournament in 2019.
Shapovalov, 78th in the world, was also in a first final in more than two years, another sign testifying to the path of the cross of this talented young man who we once saw on an equal footing with Félix Auger-Aliassime.
On Saturday, “Shapo” won by hitting 13 aces and winning 82% of the points on his first service ball.
He was the clear favorite in this duel. Medjedovic, local favorite, was only 156th in the ATP rankings.
