Dortmund takes a slap at Mainz

This Saturday, Borussia Dortmund lost heavily on the Mainz pitch (3-1).

Borussia Dortmund, competing for the Champions League, lost 3-1 at Mainz 05 on Saturday, a fourth consecutive defeat away in the Bundesliga this season which places it in 7th place in the standings.

Dortmund, who had gained confidence in midweek with a 1-0 home win over Sturm Graz, struggled against the hosts and found themselves down to ten men in the 27th minute when captain Emre Can made a reckless challenge with the studs, earning him a straight red card. Things got even worse when Lee Jae-sung scored with a dagger to put Mainz ahead in the 36th minute.

Five minutes later, the South Korean brought down Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy in the penalty area and won a penalty which the Guinean international converted. However, Dortmund's defense was found wanting again when Jonathan Burkardt diverted a cut ball in added time of the first half.

After the break, Mainz took over by scoring a third goal through Paul Nebel in the 54th minute. Dortmund, who have lost four of their five away matches this season and drawn one, have 16 points and are in seventh place. Mainz is three points behind ninth place.
