40 skippers, as many IMOCAs, 45,000 miles to cover by the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific, and a return by going up the Atlantic, the start of the Vendée Globe 2024 will be given this Sunday, November 10 at 1:02 p.m. in Les Sables-d’Olonne.
The field is high for this 10th edition with notably the first 10 from the previous edition including the winning trio Yannick Bestaven, Charlie Dalin and Louis Burton.
He had promised that he would not take part again, but Jean Le Cam, 66 years old and dean of the event, signed for a 6th participation.

For this 2024-2025 edition, six women will be at the start, including the youngest in the event, Violette Dorange, 23 years old, and Samantha Davies who, for her 4th participation, is taking the start on a brand new IMOCA.

With these 40 skippers lined up at the start, this 2024 edition of the solo round the world race, non-stop and without assistance, breaks a record number of participants for its 10th vintage.
Another record was broken during the previous edition, that of the number of boats arriving: 25 arrivals out of 33 boats leaving, a rate of 76%.
Thirteen new boats are lined up at the start of this 2024 edition. Twenty-four are foiling boats.
These side appendages raise the hull above the water to allow the IMOCA to go at high speed when the boat reaches a certain speed.
During the 2020-2021 Vendée Globe, the wind and sea conditions were not necessarily favorable to the latest generation foilers.
Jean Le Cam is leaving again this year on an IMOCA without foils although brand new.
The oldest IMOCA in the fleet is helmed by Antoine Cornic, an Owen-Clark design having competed in the 2008-2009 Vendée Globe with the Canadian Derek Hatfield, who retired due to broken spreaders.

The record for the event is held by Armel Le Cléac'h who crossed the finish line of the 2016-2017 Vendée Globe in 74 days, 3h 35' 46''.
To complete their world tour and try to do better, the skippers will have to cross three capes, Good Hope, Leeuwin and Cape Horn.
